Others: Day 4
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the LORD.
Psalm 40:3 NRSV
Thought
It is a duty of grief to learn the fine art of dismissing the sometimes thoughtless comments of others. Pronouncements meant to console you are often presumptions that trivialize grief: “It’s for the best,” “Everyone dies sooner or later,” “She’s not suffering anymore,” “He’s better off.” You are hurt and upset when careless comments add to the indignities of grief. You may feel that those who fail to understand your grief cannot be entrusted with the pain of your heart. Forgive and forget those words that hurt your heart.
Prayer
God, as grief subsides and my spiritual perspective improves, I better understand the words of others. May the experience of grief enlarge my heart to unrestrained trust. Amen.
Assurance
My new song is of praise and trust.
