Spiritual: Day 5

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Psalm 23:6 RSV

Thought

Your journey through grief is nuanced by the contrasts of light and dark, which create shadow. With acceptance, you recognize this as the long shadow cast by death, a shadow that both precedes and follows. “Even though I walk / through the valley of the shadow of death . . . ” (Psalm 23:4 RSV). Inherent within shadow is the suggestion of light. Without light there can be no shadow. You have made your way through the valley of the shadow of death because of light hidden within the shadow. You have persevered through grief because, at the end of the journey, yours is the promise of light in acceptance.

Prayer

God, through shadow you have followed me with your goodness and mercy. I am grateful that when the days of my life are past I will dwell in your house forever. Amen.

Assurance

The light of God’s goodness and mercy dwells within each shadow.
